Hide or Unhide Hard Disk Partition in Windows 8.1/8/7/Xp/Vista

Hiding a Partition from my computer or explorer can be extremely useful when you have some sensitive information on the local disk and you want others to stay away from it. After you hide a partition, the partition will be invisible to all users until you manually unhide it.

Windows OS Disk management system allows hiding drive except the System drive where the OS is installed and volume is reserved for the OS. Hiding a drive does not means deleting the volume or erasing any data but it only prevents that partition from displaying. For doing this the user must have administrative access to the system.

In future if you want to use it again, simply unhide it and it will then show up again in My Computer and Explorer.

How to hide a drive ?

1. Right click of computer and click on manage.

2. Manage window will open. From the left Pane select the disk management under storage.

Alternatively type diskmgmt.msc in the run and pressing enter to get the Disk management.

2. Now right click on drive which you want to hide and select Change Drive Letters and Paths.

3. After that Select remove. This action just removes the drive letter. This will not harm your drive.

4. Pressing on the Remove a warning message will be shown and accept it by clicking on yes. It’s just telling you that all programs installed on that drive won’t work or this drive is opened by another program.

After that, The hidden drive won’t be appearing to the administrator of the OS unless it is unhide.

How to unhide the drive ?

1. Right click of computer and Select the disk management under storage from the left pane.

Alternatively type diskmgmt.msc in the run and pressing enter to get the Disk management.

2. Now right click on drive which is hidden/removed and select Change Drive Letters and Paths. Tips: the hidden drive doesn’t contain any drive letter.

3. Now Select Add to add drive letter or path to the hidden drive. Choose a drive letter to assign the drive/partition and press on OK.

4. The hidden partition is displayed in explorer or my computer. No data is lost or damage. Even the installed files are working again without any errors.
